Update failed. Could not move the old version to the upgrade-temp-backup directory

Publish date: 04/24/2025 •  Bug • Hoster •  Matt Scheidler

This is a very specific error that we have only encountered today.

We are still in testing for our system where we plan to sell sites to a niche industry using common theme and plugins that we’ve created.

We originally were testing 100% on a Linux server.  Now we are setting up test sites on a Windows server as well.

Today we pushed out a theme update and a couple plugin updates.  Everything updated fine on Linux.  The plugins updated on Windows.  However, when we try to update the theme on Windows, we get an error:

“Update failed. Could not move the old version to the upgrade-temp-backup directory”

If I manually upload the Zip file of the theme to the Windows site, it updates successfully.

I don’t believe this is a Hoster issue per se, but I did want to inquire to see if you have encountered this before with others using your plugin.

Thank you.

We don’t have any report about this. If you need help with the Windows server, you need to provide us access about the same. We can try to check if we can solve it on our side.

Thank you for the reply. I eventually got things to work. Not sure what might have been going on at the time. You may close the ticket. Thanks!
