Update failures

We have successfully been updating sites for the last few months, but now we’re getting errors when trying to update 2 plugins and 1 theme using Hoster.  The behavior is being experienced on 5 sites.

Yesterday we were seeing this error:

“You have exceeded the maximum allowed downloads (3 per day). Please try again tomorrow.”

Today we have tried again, and now we’re seeing this:

“Update failed: The package could not be installed.”

Perhaps we have introduced something on our end which is causing the problem, but I’m not sure what it might be.  The 5 sites in question are split among 2 servers (one Windows, one Linux) and all sites are experiencing the error.

I’m not offering a lot of specifics because I don’t know what information might be helpful.  Are you familiar with one or both of these errors?

In all cases, the website recognizes the new version exists.  We get these errors after clicking the “update now” link in the WordPress admin.

I will add, we are able to successfully update the sites if we manually upload the zip files for the one theme and two plugins.

Thank you for any insight you can offer.

Update – I downgraded the Hoster plugin to 1.3.0, resaved the two plugins and one theme that were giving me troubles, and successfully pushed the updates to all my sites.

I’m not absolutely certain if downgrading was the solution, or rezipping the folders. Just wanted to give an update. For now I’ll just stick with 1.3.0. I appreciate any insight you can offer.

New update – I have Hoster running on two separate sites, with different groups of child sites running different plugins.

The other host site was also running 1.3.1 but we hadn’t made any updates to our Downloads recently. Today I found that the error logs on child sites are filling up with “You have exceeded the maximum allowed downloads (3 per day). Please try again tomorrow.”

I have downgraded this site to 1.3.0 also.

I believe my initial ticket was submitted when you weren’t available. Hopefully someone is able to review this soon. Thank you.

      Hi Matt,

Sorry for the late response. The first error regarding “You have exceeded the maximum allowed downloads (3 per day). Please try again tomorrow.” is because we have implemented a condition so that spamming is not possible for the download URL. So, we have implemented a limit to only allow 3 times update fetch in one day.

Regarding the other error you mentioned, we will need more details or maybe a dev/staging site setup with the latest Hoster version and with one of your plugins installed there and so then we can do the debugging that why it is failing.

Also, please make sure that you are using the latest update.php file because in that we send this update, so maybe you are still using old update.php file and also make sure you are also using the updated main plugin file code as well.a

      Regards,
      Osama

  • Will close this one as looks it’s solved. If not please open another ticket

No, I just haven’t had time to set up a staging site. The issue is common to both of the 2 sites I have running the hoster plugin. Both are working fine on 1.3.0 for the time being. I’ll try to get to that as soon as possible. Thank you.
